Lyrically, this album reminded me of Glimpses by Something Like Silas (now Future of Forestry).
The vocals lift the lyrics in such a way that they become both complementary to the music and instrumental in their own right. The themes are overtly Christian, yet this band has a huge non-Christian following. Good music is good music, no matter what label.
Side Note: They also incorporate some screaming into the background that is done tastefully and strangely appropriate (like the song Hello Alone, with the line Is anybody out there?’)
The music is full sounding without being overbearing. While layering different levels of instruments in each song (including electronica sounding keyboards), it never overshadows the lyrics or becomes the sum of the parts rather than the whole. At times, the music is pared down to bare sounding piano or the strumming of one guitar, which sounds raw without sounding garage. |
