Themes
This is a very dark movie, as most apocalyptic films are. It is definitely Blade Runner for a new generation. The primary theme is that of despair and hope. One of the characters says, "As the sound of the playground faded, despair set in. Funny what happens in a world without children’s voices." A haunting statement. We see how different characters deal with this hopelessness: Theo drinks and smokes, Julianne gives herself towards a cause, Theo’s rich cousin, when asked why he continues to live in luxury when none of it will matter in 100 years says, "I just don’t think about it".
The real discussion question that comes from a movie like this is, What really keeps you going? and Which character would you identify with if this were to become a reality?
Immigration plays another large role in this movie. Britain is the last nation holding the world together, taking in refugees from all over the world. It seems an obvious political commentary of how we want to exert our influence over every other culture, yet not allow immigrants to influence us. You can’t be a pimp and a prostitute too. |
