When does our consumption of goods with no concern as to how they were created become our problem? Practically, we are not going to research every single purchase to make sure our cosmetics weren't tested on animals, our T-shirts weren’t made in sweat shops, and ensure that our milk jugs are biodegradable.

The ending of the movie suggests that the solution is to check before we buy diamonds to make sure they weren’t purchased from conflict zones. However, there are several problems with this.

  1. It’s not a real solution to the problem. Due to the sinfulness of man’s heart, there will always be an issue with forced labor. If it wasn’t for diamonds, then it would be oil, or some other natural resource.

  2. The sales rep at Zales has no idea where the diamonds come from, and whether or not they are blood diamonds. Would the corporate execs want them to know?

  3. The issue is not primarily economic. This is a human rights issue that should focus on freeing the people, and fighting the injustice of this at a local and global level.
