There is a scene where Maddie sees the hopelessness of the situation and says, “This whole country is a war, why should I help one person?” The movie chronicles one family that was helped by these people. This should cause a lot of great discussion about how to tackle global social justice issues. We can’t do everything, but we can do something. That which we can do, we should do.

A great topic for discussion comes during a poignant conversation between Danny and Maddie where he begins to share about his past. He says, “I used to wonder if God will ever forgive us for what we’ve done to each other. Then I realized that God left this place a long time ago.”

The theme of ‘Where is God during all of this’ is one that is bound to come up. How could a good God allow this to happen? Why? How can he be so powerful, yet allow all this to happen? This is an area any thinking Christian must come to grips with and be able to articulate, because it is a key question from our culture today. Another theme is the intrinsic evilness of mankind.
