Aside from learning of one mans experience on the mission field, and learning how to appreciate their culture, he deals specifically with how to create a local indigenous church free from Western trappings and how to empower the Masai to carry on the task of evangelization themselves. It contains nuggets of wisdom from the field, such as unhealthy missionary dependence, as well as success stories of tribes who understood the message for the first time, and learn how a true African church would look. He also writes a sobering section about what happened when he arrived at certain villages that had met western missionaries before, and what their understanding of the gospel was.
Considered by many to be a landmark modern missons writing, it is strong on function and practicality but weak on the theology behind it. If you are interested in missions or missions strategy (which every Christian should be, to some extent), then I recommend this book with some reservation. |
