Themes: 'You Deserve Each Other', is a phrase used several times throughout the play. While intended in a flippant manner (as when Glinda gives Elphaba the tall pointy witch hat, saying, "Black is the new pink") it does portray an element in the play. Initially, it seems as if Elphaba and the Wizard of OZ are being paired up as the characters of depth, while Glinda and Fiyero play the less thoughtful counterparts. In an interesting story twist, it is Elphaba and Fiyero that prove to be the characters of substance and the Wizard and Glinda are the shallow. The other pairing that is not as it seems is Nessarose and Boc, showing that who we think deserves the other is not necessarily the case in this play.

Defying Gravity: With the song of the same title being a clever wordplay regarding Elphaba flying, her character represents a non-conformist willing to go against the grain while Glinda, who lacks the strength or character, always takes the path of least resistance. "I’m through with playing by the rules of someone else’s game…I’m through accepting limits because someone else says they’re so." These are lyrics that we would do well not to miss, as it reflects a ethos that runs through our culture today. The heart behind it is right: a desire to reach beyond what we know imagine right now. But what if it’s not our game we’re playing in the first place? What if there are boundaries that are set by God, not to limit us, but to save us from colliding with the sun like Icarus? A topic worthy of discussion in light of the way most people think of Christianity: a set of seemingly purposeless rules that keep us from having fun and ‘defying gravity’.
